JK/SK - Junior Scientists: 

Dinosaurs, Volcanoes, Colour and Space will all be explored during this fun & exciting hands-on workshop. Working as paleontologists children will participate in a mini-dinosaur dig and will discover the differences between meat eating and plant eating dinosaurs. Volcanoes, rainbows and liquid lasagna will each help illuminate the wonder of colour. Children will investigate the elements of space when we take your class on a trip through the solar system. At the conclusion of this workshop children will have made a Dinosaur Tooth, Rainbow Slush, Crazy Dough and Mini Rocket to bring home with them.

JK/SK – Seeking Our Senses

Wake up your senses with our whirlwind adventure through the science of your body! Students go big with our giant eyeball model and go small with magnifying glasses to see tiny details in everyday objects. We will investigate sound with a Wave Motion model and use our Guitar Boxes to experiment with vibrations. The children's sense of smell is tested and then we see how animals use theirs. Challenge your class with our Mystery Sock activity and discover why seeing isn't always believing. 

Grade 1 – Body Basics: 

Understanding Life Systems – Needs & Characteristics of Living Things:

Join us as we journey into the depths of our skeletal, digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems and discover the amazing way our brains coordinate all that we do! Students will investigate their senses, test their eyes and noses, and try to communicate using Braille. They will love learning about their environment and all the living things that share it. This offers an amazing way to explore the ways that we are all connected.

Grade 1 - Spectacular Structures & Mad Materials

Structures & Mechanisms – Everyday Structures / Matter & Materials – Characteristics of Objects and Properties of Materials: 

As Junior Engineers students will build structures and identify the cool shapes used to provide strength and stability. In this hands-on workshop children will identify three types of materials (wood, plastic, and fabric) used in building structures. Grade 1 students will use their five senses to gather information about secret mixtures and to guess the materials used in creating them. Children will construct a cool box to hold all their personal treasures. Using a variety of materials, their creative energy will pulse as students create a unique, one-of-a-kind, nifty noises container.

Grade 2 -  Moving Machines

Structures & Mechanisms – Movement:

Levers, inclined planes, pulleys, screws, wedges, wheel & axles; all simple machines every Junior Engineer will need to know. Throughout a series of hands-on experiments, students will understand the purpose of the six simple machines and will identify examples around them. Gravity, balance and friction will all be put through a Mad Science test as children work together using inclined planes. Along with receiving a journal, students will construct a spinning top to bring home with them. Combining four simple levers, children will also build their very own Micro-Pincher. 

Grade 2 - Mad About Matter

Matter & Materials – Properties of Liquids and Solids:  

As Junior Scientists, students will explore the three states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas. They will be amazed to discover that water can exist as each state of matter. As the children pour and mix liquids they will gain a greater understanding of the concept of buoyancy and density. Reinforcing the importance of safety in the home and school, we will identify product warning symbols. Suspending beads, sequins and glitter; students will marvel how they are able to make a Sparkle Tube which they will bring home with them. Everyone will also make a container of our famous Mad Science slime!

Grade 3 - Make it Move

Energy and Control – Forces and Movements: 

Move it, move it, move it! The mighty forces of gravity, inertia and friction will be tested in this fun & interactive workshop. Students will investigate what forces come into play as they start, stop, attract, repel, and change direction of an object. Students will be amazed to discover the ways in which each force affects the operation of everyday devices. Throughout a series of hands-on experiments, the wonders of potential and kinetic energy will be revealed. Students will understand how energy can be stored and released to create movement. Students will construct a cool device that moves using static electricity.  Harnessing stored and moving energy, students will each make a Rattlesnake Scare to bring home with them!

Grade 3 - Super Strong Structures

Structures and Mechanisms – Stability: 

Squares, triangles, cylinders, domes and arches will all be explored as we introduce students to the super strong world of sustainable structures. As students work together building a bridge, they will gain valuable experience asking and solving important structural issues. Throughout a series of cool hands-on experiments, students will identify building materials best suited for specific structures. Students will also discover which forces are acting on a structure. Everyone will construct an amazing 3-D cube which will be put through a Mad Science strength test.

Grade 4 - Mineral Mania

Earth and Space Systems – Rocks and Minerals: 

During this fun & interactive workshop the stone cold truth of how igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks are formed will be revealed. During an amusing demonstration, Junior Mineralogist will discover how rocks are classified. Using the Moh’s Hardness Scale and a variety of minerals, Grade 4 students will test, observe and record their findings. Panning for Gems will excite all thrill seekers. Peeling back the layers, students will expose the earth’s core, mantle and crust. While exploring how different sediments settle, students will make a super cool Sedimentary Stacker to bring home with them.

 Grade 4 - Powerful Pulleys & Groovy Gears

Understanding Structures & Mechanisms:

Oh no! Rogue Mad Scientist, Professor Chaos, has stolen all the pulley and gear knowledge in the world! Can your team relearn everything that's lost and prevent disaster? Take-Homes: Desk Elevator and Gear Toy Defeat his dastardly plan by discovering and sharing knowledge that survived the brain drain! What are pulleys and gears? Where are they used? How do they work? Experiment with fixed, moveable, and compound pulley elevator systems for Megawatt Mall then build a new water well for Tungsten Towers. Get into the groove with bevel, helical, spur, and worm gears and test out a variety of gear systems, recording all your findings in a journal for future reference. Be amazed by early bicycle designs and track the changes using our interactive Bicycle Gear Model, then create your own input/output gear assembly to inspire others.

Grade 5 - Change Matters

Matter and Materials – Properties and Changes in Matter: 

During fun & interactive demonstrations, students will be able to answer the age-old question; what’s matter? Frosty dry Ice and hot melting metal will be used to exemplify the changes that can occur to matter. Evaporation, condensation, and sublimation; three awe-inspiring words students won’t soon forget. Students will be amazed to discover the differences between physical and chemical changes. Throughout a series of cool hands-on experiments, students will test how chemicals interact when combined. We will light up the classroom with an astonishing indoor fireworks display. With a pinch of this and a drop of that, students will produce a chemical reaction, creating a polymer and a growing ‘Crystal Garden’ to bring home.  

Grade 6 - Air & Aerodynamics

Matter and Materials – Properties of Air and Characteristics of Flight: 

Up, up and away! During this fun & uplifting workshop students will be blown away as they investigate the mighty properties of air and identify how it is possible for humans to fly. Throughout a series of experiments, children will discover air pressure and Bernoulli’s Principle. The wonders of flight, lift, drag, propulsion, and gravity will all be revealed. Children will put their new found knowledge of flight to the ultimate test as they construct a flying football plane. Using a different design, children will make a second plane to bring home with them that cuts, glides and soars to heights previously unknown.
